The history of Val di Fiemme

 

Talking about Val di Fiemme and its historical origin can take you back to the Neolithic age through the remains of human settlements, when for reasons of survival, hunters built their homes on land rich in game. Thanks to the Roman Empire, the inhabitants of the valley, hunters, fishermen and farmers began to form organizations inspired by Roman rule. Around 500 A.D., the crisis of the Roman Empire led the population to flee and hide in the valleys, including Val di Fiemme.

 

With feudalism and the Christian religion, Val di Fiemme succeeded in being part of the Bishopric of Trent, subsequently asking for autonomy until it achieved it in 1111 A.D. Thanks to the victory, it was nicknamed “Magnifica Comunità di Fiemme” (Magnificent Community of Fiemme), a community still existing till date, which has as its goal the protection of the environment and the culture of the valley, and the Torre Civica is the symbol of its autonomy.

 

In 1315, the valley can finally benefited from the goods and services that the valley itself offers, pastures, hunting, fishing, and thanks to the visits of the Bishop of Trento, began its first journey towards tourism.

Val di Fiemme: Outdoor Museum

 

The Val di Fiemme is not only nature and history, but it gives lovers of “Cultural Knowledge” the opportunity to dig deep into the past, with the help of art and architecture that bore witness to an era and the various changes. The ” Outdoor Museum ” is very peculiar: it is called so because of its 150 wall frescoes on the facades of ancient houses, which create a real documentary of the history of the valley. There is also spiritual art represented by at least 35 churches of different styles: Romanesque, Gothic, Baroque, Neoclassical.

 

Some examples are the church of San Tommaso a Daiano, of baroque origin, the church of Sant’Eliseo a Tesero, of Gothic style; the archpriest church of the Assunta a Cavalese of Gothic origin, then rebuilt in the XV century in Romanesque-Gothic style. The inhabitants of the valley consider this church a monument because it houses funerary monuments from the 19th century.

 

Of considerable artistic value is the Palazzo della Magnifica Comunità in Cavalese, which houses a picture gallery, a museum and an archive of manuscripts and statutes from the history of Fiemme. An important rustic architecture are the Tobià, dark barns that have been worned down by time and sun, with balconies inside to dry the products of the fields and external ovens that were used to bake bread.

Traditions of the valley

 

The inhabitants of Val di Fiemme, the “Fiemmesi”, proud of the freedom obtained and bound by a deep love for their land, have habits, customs and typical traditions, which are still repeated today with events and spiritual rituals or special events and celebrations such as the carnival, understood by the population as a thank you for the “good” season ended, and a welcome to the season that takes over.

 

Many other carnival events always have as their protagonist the Val di Fiemme and its villages, such as, the carnival of the “Matoci”, in Valfloriana, where they portray the men who had to overcome customs duties and tolls to cross the border. The “Banderal” of Carano, which is done every 4 years, where the bachelors of the country meet with the aim of forming the society of the flag.

 

The “witch trial” in Cavalese, which describes an event of the 500, when Val di Fiemme, due to a series of disasters, was thought to be the victim of witchcraft. All the traditions  explain how the people of Fiemme are tied to their origin.
